UpdateRootkits detected after upgrade

Recently, a few AVG users have reported unknown rootkit detections on files such as atapi.sys, pci.sys, ntfs.sys or spqr.sys (name may vary) after updating to AVG 2014. We would like to inform you that this issue has been fixed in the latest version of AVG 2014.0.4158.

Please update your AVG and STPD driver (this driver is used by virtual drives as well as applications pre-installed by computer manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, …) to prevent possible false detections and compatibility issues.
However we also recommend thoroughly checking your system with AVG. For more information about rootkits and how to remove them, visit the following articles:

AVG Nation Toolbar

Many of you have already spotted that latest update of AVG Toolbar and Secure Search is now called AVG Nation Toolbar. The main and most visible change is the new name and branding. However we’ve also improved detection of dangerous webpages and the AVG Do Not Track feature which allows you to control your internet privacy. You can see the update notice below. We also recommend reading through this blog post where you can find more details about this update.

Click OK to install it or Decline the update to stop the installation and close the pop-up. Your Firewall may ask you whether to allow the AVG-Secure-Search-Update-0913b.exe (name may slightly vary). Please allow it if you want to install this update.

Follow the How to uninstall AVG Nation search, homepage and toolbar from your browser article if you don’t like this update and want to remove the AVG Nation Toolbar completely.

AVG Trial expired

When your AVG Trial version expires, you will receive the “Don’t lose your AVG protection!” message (the wording may vary).

There are two options how to resume AVG protection once the trial expires.

1) You can purchase a license for the advanced protection you were enjoying.

2) You can remove the Trial version and install AVG Free for continued basic protection.

Activate AVG

Core AVG products such as AVG AntiVirus and AVG PC TuneUp need to be activated with a license number. There are few common mistakes which may lead to unsuccessful activations. Therefore I’d like to share few tips on how to activate your AVG smoothly and without any complications.

  1. Download the latest version of AVG product you’ve purchased.
  2. Make sure you have the latest and complete license number. You can find it in your mailbox or inside the box with installation disc. Go to http://www.avg.com/lost if you can’t find it or not sure.
  3. Copy&Paste license from your mailbox or transcribe it carefully from the box.
  4. Make sure there are no spaces or other characters before or after the license number.
  5. Click Activate to start enjoying your AVG.
