There are two things we love at AVG, keeping our users safe and listening to our Community, so what better way to do both at once than a security related poll.

The question of technology vs knowledge is a very common one in the community. Many people think that they are smart enough and therefore they won’t get viruses. Others think that they can just install an AV and they will be safe forever.

We thought it would be interesting to hear what the AVG Facebook Community considered to be the most important so we put it to them this poll.

The discussion really took off with over 150 comments from Facebook Community members, we’ve broken down the different sides of the argument into key points given by our members.

Pro Knowledge:

• Knowledge of threats is more important as there are some threats that can circumvent security software. Also knowledge comes into play when you want to prevent the threat altogether. Dmitriy
• I think it’s better to stay up to date with knowledge. Learning to stay on safe sites and what you can and can’t do online is a big step towards keeping your system disease free. John
• I’d say knowledge is more important. Technology may sometimes fail at scanning and preventing threats. You should never rely entirely on technology, there’s no substitute for human intuition. Nestor

Pro Technology:

• You can have all the knowledge in the world but without the tools be left defenseless. Patrick
• I’d rather have the technology, so I can then gain the knowledge. It’d be harder to make the technology. Connor
• As an older person I find it hard to keep up with the latest technology, so I rely on AVG to do the hard work for me. Cheryl

Little bit of both:

• I vote for both, using AVG to avoid threats and having the BRAIN to use AVG in the FIRST PLACE and having the BRAIN to KEEP YOUR AVG UP TO DATE! Donald
• Both are equally important. You can’t avoid all threats, but you can take measures to avoid ones you know, and defend against those you don’t. Collin
• They are both necessary for security. A guard dog that doesn’t know what to keep out or even one that keeps everything out is useless. On the contrary, knowing what to keep out without the ability to keep it out, is equally as useless. Shane

At AVG we too think that you need both. AV software is good, but new malware is being designed all the time including social engineering, which can bypass security software altogether. This is where knowledge comes into play to ensure that you are aware of which things can harm you and which can’t.

We believe that this approach will keep our users far safer than either of the two alternatives alone.
